New moons
ASTRONOMERS have found new moons in Hubble Space Telescope photos of Saturn,
the ringed planet that already has 18 identified natural satellites.
Dr Amanda Bosh of the Lowell Observatory near Flagstaff, Arizona, and Mr Andrew Rivkin
of Arizona University said the moons could be detected because the images were taken
during an Earth ring crossing, when Saturn's dust rings are seen edge-on and the light they reflect is dimmed.
Two of the new moons may be Atlas and Prometheus, found by the Voyager spacecraft in
1980, though they are in a slightly different location than Voyager findings would suggest.
Dr Bosh said: "We're adding at least two more moons to Saturn, and possibly four."
